When should you book your senior photos?
The short answer: most of my seniors book the summer between junior and senior year. It’s the most popular season for a reason, but it isn’t the only good one.
After 15+ years of photographing seniors around Fort Worth and DFW, I can tell you every season has its own look, its own perks, and a few things to plan around. The right one depends on your schedule, your style, and when your yearbook photo is due.
Here’s my honest take on spring, summer, and fall so you can pick the season that fits you.
Spring senior photos
Spring is the early bird season. If you’re a junior who likes to be ahead of the game, this is your window. Everything in North Texas is green, the wildflowers are out, and the temperatures are comfortable enough for any outfit.

Pros
- Mild weather, so layers, jackets, and longer sleeves are all on the table
- Green fields and wildflowers you can’t get any other time of year in Texas
- You’re finished before the summer rush and have your images in hand early
- Plenty of time before yearbook deadlines
Cons
- Texas spring weather is unpredictable, so we may need a backup date for rain or storms
- Allergy season is real
- Spring is busy with prom, sports, and finals, so scheduling takes some planning
- Your look may change over the summer (haircut, braces off, a summer tan)
Best for: juniors who want to be done early, and anyone who loves a soft, fresh, green look.
Summer senior photos
Summer is the most popular season, and it’s when most of my seniors book. School is out, schedules are open, and there’s no homework or practice competing for your time. You get to actually enjoy the day instead of squeezing it in.
If you’re willing to get up a little early, my favorite way to beat the Texas heat is a morning session. It’s the coolest part of the day, the light is soft and flattering, and your hair and makeup stay fresh. If you’d rather have that glowing sunset look, we start in the evening instead. And when you want a break from the weather altogether, my studio is air-conditioned and ready.

Pros
- The most flexible schedule of the year, including weekdays
- Long days and beautiful golden hour light
- Time to plan outfits, hair, and makeup without school stress
- Your images are done well before yearbook deadlines and ready for graduation announcements later
Cons
- It’s Texas, so it’s hot. I plan sessions around the cooler parts of the day and use my studio to give you a break from the heat.
- Dates fill fast, so you need to book early
- Vacations, camps, and summer jobs can narrow your open dates
- You most likely won’t want to add your heavier outfits like jackets or sweaters
Best for: seniors with a packed school year, and anyone who wants that warm, sun-drenched look.
Tip: Professional makeup is a must for summer sessions! My MUA is the best and uses sweatproof makeup that stays beautiful, even in the Texas heat!

Fall senior photos
Fall is when it finally feels like senior year. The heat breaks, the light gets warmer, and you can wear the jackets, boots, and layers that summer won’t let you. It’s also the season for letter jackets, jerseys, and anything tied to your sport or activity.

Pros
- Cooler temperatures and comfortable outdoor sessions
- Rich, warm color and texture, especially later in the season
- Layers, boots, and fall wardrobe photograph beautifully
- You’re officially a senior, so the photos match the moment
Cons
- Yearbook deadlines usually fall in this season, so timing is tight
- Football, band, homecoming, and college applications fill your calendar fast
- The sun sets earlier, which means fewer evening time slots
- In North Texas, real fall color shows up late, so the look depends on the date
- Fewer open dates, since the season is short and busy
Best for: seniors who love a cozy, layered look and want sports or activities in their photos. Check your yearbook deadline first.
The seasons side by side

Still can’t decide? You don’t have to do it alone. Planning is a big part of what I do, and we’ll talk through your style, your schedule, and your deadlines before we ever pick a date.
When to book (not just when to shoot)
Whichever season you choose, reach out 2 to 3 months before you want your session. That gives us time to plan outfits, choose locations, line up hair and makeup, and get you a date that works.
A simple way to work backward:
- Find your yearbook photo deadline. It’s usually in the fall of senior year.
- Pick the season that fits your style and schedule.
- Contact me 2 to 3 months before that season.
There’s no wrong season for senior photos. There’s only the one that fits you. These are photos you’ll have for the next 30 years, so give yourself time to plan them well.
